Diane Schmidt

Diane grew up in Welland,  and now resides in Port Colborne. At the age of 13, she received her first art instruction from Ruth White in Pelham.  She excelled in her art classes at Welland High, and received a bursary for her design and work on two murals there.  After graduating,  she explored calligraphy,  pen and ink,  watercolor,  sketching,  and eventually oils. She worked for a time at a small advertising company in Welland,  where she developed skills in graphic Arts. In the early 90's, she moved to Port Dover,  worked hard on her painting,  and was accepted into a small gallery there,  where she sold successfully.

Having a love of textiles,  she also designs and sells rugs at Niagara Crafters in Port Colborne.  Her artwork is influenced by her love of science fiction,  and by her love of the water and boats. Her work is deeply symbolic and emphasizes journeys,  and the things learned on journeys,  such as tolerance,  embracing of differences  and the letting go of things that restrict us. Her work generates a healing,  adventurous and curious energy.  She is very happy to be a member of the VAW, and is looking forward to the learning opportunities and the support to be found from this warm and welcoming group of artists.
