Although John was painting and sketching since grade school his real art instruction was from working in the graphic arts industry. He was engaged in all manner of commercial art from mechanical, layout, illustrative, animation, photography, and commercial production as well as the technical aspect of color separation and printing in offset and lithography. The experience from Arnott Rogers Batten and Rapid Grip and Batten was an invaluable experience as an education. When the FLQ and Renee Levesque in Quebec caused many advertising businesses to leave the province, John moved to Ontario. Painting and art were more of a hobby then until his retirement in 2011. Today, John is constantly experimenting with mediums and techniques and expanding his skills in a variety of subjects. Teaching "Plein Air" (painting outdoors from mature) at Niagara College was also on his agenda. Commissions for portraiture or different subject matter are welcomed by John.
